The first annual Hong Kong Spinal Course was held from the 13th to the 18th of October 2011. Nineteen delegates undertook the course with the winner of the 2011 Combined Movements Cup being Jenny Chan, from the Perfect Pointe Physiotherapy Practice. The course was run at Kerry Fung’s excellent teaching practice rooms and was organised by Colin Symmonds (The Body Group). A good time was had by all, especially the tutor, and next year’s course should be equally challenging but enjoyable. A big thanks to the organisers for an excellent course. See you in 2012

Tuesday’s World Congress of Physical Therapy, Focussed Symposium on the Spinal Manipulation, raised the issue of the risk of manipulation and Cervical Artery Dissection. Recent work by an Osteopathic PhD student of mine (Dr Louise Potter) has shown that whilst the local, deep musculature twitches in response to manipulation it is not relevant to pain changes and is no different to the twich generated by a sham manipulation. So, the theory that spinal manipulation “reboots” the whole system looks a bit unlikely.
Combined Movement Theory is a popular and reasonable way to learn to mobilise and manipulate the spinal column.
The approach is evident in Higher Educational institutes with recent workshops, and invites to lecture, at the following Universities.
